Eligibility

The University Scholars Program is a selective academic opportunity, not a scholarship program. However, students will be considered for division-based academic scholarships and are encouraged to apply for our Signature Scholar Programs. University Scholars are also eligible to apply for financial assistance on the same basis as other applicants. $1,000 – $2,000 annual scholarship in addition to other merit awards for which students qualify. We look for individuals who are successfully academic, but their achievements transcend the classroom — university scholars strongly demonstrate personal accomplishments , citizenship, and leadership.

Washington University’s medical program is highly selective, so finalists for the University Scholars Program are accomplished in their academic and extracurricular undertakings.

On-Campus Interviews for Finalists

The University Scholars Committee will interview selected finalists, who will need to come to campus for interviews and related activities during the weekend of March 26-29, 2020. Washington University will cover finalists’ round-trip expenses for lodging and transportation (within the United States). Those who are named University Scholars will be notified shortly after finalists’ weekend, and those not selected as a finalist may still be admitted to one of Washington University’s outstanding undergraduate divisions.

To apply for the University Scholars Program in Medicine:

  • Submit an application for admission to the Class of 2024.
  • Log in to your WashU Pathway account to submit the separate application for the University Scholars Program in Medicine.
  • Write a brief answer (150 words or less) to the following questions:
    • Why are you interested in pursuing a career in medicine? Describe any life and/or medically-related experiences that have sparked this interest, as well as any personal attributes that make you especially suited for a medical career.
    • Briefly summarize any research or medical experience and how it has impacted you. (Please do not submit research documents.)
    • (Optional) Are there any additional circumstances that you would like to share that you were unable to include in your application? Some applicants use this space to describe unique experiences, or challenges such as access to education/research, socioeconomic factors, and/or identification with a particular culture, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a member of your community who can speak to your research experience or interest in the field of healthcare.
  • All applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Central Time on January 2, 2020 and complete in our office by January 6, 2020. For best consideration, we encourage you to submit your applications by December 15, 2019.

What is the first step in applying to the Medical Scholars and Dental Scholars Program?

You must first apply for admission to Augusta University. To be eligible for the Professional Scholars Program you must apply by the Early Action deadline of November 15th. Applications for undergraduate admission become available in August of your senior year. Access the application.

Admission for the Professional Scholars program is very competitive. If you feel you are a competitive applicant based on your academic credentials and passion for serving others you are encouraged to apply.

There are not special scholarships for accepted Professional Scholar students; however, you are encouraged to apply for institutional scholarships by the scholarship deadline in order to be evaluated for a comprehensive list of scholarship opportunities. In addition, as a public institution in Georgia, qualifying Georgia residents are awarded the HOPE or ZELL Miller Scholarship.
